A poetry book containing 50 pieces of poems entitled “Akwessa” authored by Mr. Sampath Kithsiri Udawatta, an Embassy official was launched at a ceremony on 19th August 2010 at the Embassy auditorium in the midst of a gathering of invitees, Embassy staff and their families.
Mr. Udawatta who has done a great deal of research into poetry has developed varied skills as well as talents and is a budding poet and a culture enthusiast. In his works, Mr. Udawatta has drawn inspiration from great poets and artists. The collection of poems include those dedicated to Sri Lanka’s legendary artists, novelists, war heroes and his village folks. The fine pieces of poetry narrated by Mr. Udawatta in his book suit all readers, the young and the adults alike.
The ceremony began with the lighting of the ceremonial oil lamp after which Mrs. Udawatta delivered the welcome remarks. Speaking on the occasion, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador, Sarath Dissanayake said Mr. Udawatta, through his poetry book has brought his hidden talents to the fore and has set an example to others. Mr. Sunil Sarath Perera, Minister Counsellor in his special presentation on “Sri Lanka’s poetry & its future” gave an insight into some of the greatest works produced by veterans in the field of poetry and added that they have become an inspiration and icons to the young and upcoming poets.
Mr. D M P B Dissanayake, Counsellor also spoke and appreciated Mr. Udawatta’s dedication and commitment to poetry and arts.
Mr. Udawatta in his remarks thanked his family, colleagues and friends for supporting his poetry work and briefed on the collection of poems he has presented in his book
