The Embassy Labour Division has successfully negotiated the deportation of over 100 Sri Lankans on 28th March who have been detained by the Kuwaiti authorities in immigration centers for such violations as overstay, illegal stay, runaways etc. The group of deportees who left Kuwait on 28th March was seen off at the Airport by Mr. M.B.M. Zarook, Mr. N.M. Ameer and Mr. A.D. Piyas of the Embassy Labour Section.
The group of 106 deportees included 95 females and 11 males who have been held in detention ranging from 3 – 6 months. This deportation marks the largest number of Sri Lankans deported from kuwait on a single occasion and was done on the basis of negotiations conducted by the Embassy Labour Section staff, in particular Mr. Herath Yapa, Minister Counsellor, Mr. N.M. Ameer, Mr. Piyas etc. with the Kuwaiti officials in charge of immigration, deportation etc. All arrangements with regard to the deportation have been coordinated by the Labour Section with the cooperation of its staff including the Embassy Safe-house Warden Mrs. Chandrani Amarasinghe, the Chauffeurs Mr. A.D. Piyasiri and Mr. A.A.D. Adikari under the supervision of Mrs. Kalyani Herath, Minister Counsellor and Mr. M.B.M. Zarook, Labour Welfare Officer .
Those who left Kuwait have appreciated the Embassy officials for their tireless efforts and commitment toward the welfare and wellbeing of Sri Lankan workers. The deportation of this group is particularly significant as the detainees have been straightaway taken to the Airport, which is an exceptional case specially arranged for this particular group of deportees, thanks to the perseverance of Labour Section staff. Under normal circumstances, detainees are usually cleared and deported through jail which usually takes 2 – 3 months to complete the formalities.
Those who left Kuwait will be able to celebrate the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year together with their families and friends in Sri Lanka.
