The compensation case of late Ms. Nuwaragedara Nilanthi Gunathilaka, Sri Lankan domestic worker who died in Kuwait of ill-treatment, cruelty etc. on 2nd December 2009, came to a satisfactory conclusion on 22nd March 2010 with the award of KD 12,500/- (approximately Rs. 5 million) by the sponsor as compensation.
It is noted that following intense discussions between the Embassy and the parties involved, the sum of money paid as compensation has been renegotiated from the initial offer of KD 10,000/- to KD 12,500/-, which is in excess of KD 2,500/- than the amount claimed by the NOK of the deceased in Sri Lanka.
The compensation money in a sum of KD 12,500 in cash was handed over to the Embassy on 22nd March by a relative of the sponsor witnessed by the Ambassador, Minister Counsellor, Mrs. Kalyani Herath, Counsellor, Mr. D.M.P.B. Dissanayake, Labour Welfare Officer, Mr. M.B.M. Zarook and the Embassy Lawyer Mr. Hashim Majed, who negotiated the deal with the sponsor on behalf of the Embassy and the NOK. This money will be remitted to the NOK in due course to be paid through the Foreign Ministry Consular Division and the Office of the Public Trustee.
On behalf of the NOK and the Sri Lankan Embassy, we wish to place on record our sincere appreciation to the staff of the Labour and Consular Divisions of the mission in Kuwait, officials of the Foreign Ministry and the SLBFE, Mr. Hashim Majed and his staff, for the excellent coordination and expeditious arrangements made in order to speed up documentation and follow-up work among the parties involved (i.e. the Embassy, NOK, Foreign Ministry, SLBFE, Lawyers etc.) which resulted in the successful completion of negotiations and the award of compensation just within 04 months from the death.
