The Labour Section of the Embassy in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and SLBFE has successfully negotiated the repatriation of another group of 123 Sri Lankans from Kuwait to Sri Lanka on 30th May 2010.It is recalled that on 28th March 2010 a group of 106 Sri Lankans was repatriated to Sri Lanka on a similar initiative taken by the Embassy.
The deportees were comprised of 15 males and 108 females who had been held in the Embassy safe-house on charges of visa over stay, illegal stay etc. This is the single largest repatriation of Sri Lankans carried out by the Embassy in recent times which was executed on the basis of successful negotiations between the Embassy staff and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Labour & Social Affairs, Department of Immigration, the Police and other authorities including Domestic Workers Department (Dahiya Police) in Kuwait.
The airfare of the deportees was borne in part by the deportees themselves while the SLBFE met the airfare of the others. A significant feature of this deportation was that the deportees were not left at the Immigration centers or at Police stations prior to their departure and were taken straight away to the Airport which is an exception to the normal deportation procedures.
The deportees were pleased that they were not subjected to any inconvenience right through out the process which was made possible due to the perseverance of the Embassy staff who had extensive negotiations with the Kuwaiti authorities toward the successful implementation of this special arrangement.
