Out of sheer compassion, a group of Sri Lankan well-wishers joined hands to help a Sri Lankan woman in distress towards realizing her dream of having a family reunion almost after 22 years. W.M. Chandrika, a teacher by profession came to Kuwait 22 years ago in search of a better future for her family in Sri Lanka. Having dashed her hopes and ended up in a state of despair she approached the Sri Lankan Embassy in Kuwait recently and narrated her tale to the officials. Her agony was too much to bear and was further compounded by her life threatening health ailments and financial liabilities. The embassy officials soon sprang into action and sent an urgent appeal for donations from Sri Lankan well-wishers in the community. The response was overwhelming. Within a matter of few days a group of following volunteers came into her rescue and enlivened her hopes. Just last month they all converged on the Embassy and handed their donations to the Embassy staff in the presence of Chandrika.

The Independence Day messages from H.E. Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the President, Hon. D.M Jayarathne the Prime Minister and Hon. Prof. G.L.Peiris , Foreign Minister were also read. While delivering an Independence Day message, the Ambassador stressed the importance of the unity of all communities towards development of the country. He also valued the contribution made by the expatriate community abroad for the betterment of the country. The participants were served with traditional Sri Lankans foods after word.
Over a period of 2,500 years, the island was known by a variety of names – “Taprobane” by the ancient Greeks and Romans and “Serendip” by the Arab writers and sailors in olden days. However, according to the Sri Lankan historical tradition, “Lanka” was the original name of the island. It was in use for centuries until the European invasions in the 15th Century. During the British period (1815-1948), the island was popularly known as “Ceylon.” This name was used even after the country gained independence in 1948. With the adoption of the New Constitution in 1972, the traditional name “Sri Lanka” (Resplendent Island) was adopted, in keeping with the rich and varied culture of the nation. Colombo is the country’s capital and largest city.
The country is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts, rubber, and cinnamon. The natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s tropical forests, beaches, and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make it a world famous tourist destination.
Relations between the Kuwait and Sri Lanka, from the time immemorial have always been cordial and friendly. Over the years, bilateral agreements relating to trade, cultural cooperation, and an investment have been concluded. We greet the people and government of Sri Lanka led by Their Excellencies, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, House Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, and Chief Justice, Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, and it’s Embassy in the Kuwait, headed by H.E., Ambassador CAHM Wijeratne on the occasion of the 64th Anniversary of its independence.
