Clarification on Kamalawathi’s story in the “Sunday Divaina” of 25th July 2010
Tuesday, 31 August 2010 11:13

TO  :  ALL SRI LANKANS IN KUWAIT

Reference “Kuwait Times” article of 14th July on the plight of Kamalawathi who is alleged to have been denied her salaries and other benefits for over 13 years by her Kuwaiti sponsor.    The “Kuwait Times” article was reproduced in the Embassy web page on 15th July ( please browse  page 3 of the web )

Based on the Kamalawathi’s pathetic story, “Sunday Divaina” newspaper of 25th July edition carried an article in which the Sri Lankan Embassy has been unfairly taken to task by its sub-editor.  Subsequently, the Embassy made representations ( through the Foreign Ministry ) to the newspaper and got a clarification / rebuttal published in the “Sunday Divaina” of 29th August.  In the rebuttal published on 29th August, it is regretted that the following 02 concluding paragraphs (final and penultimate ) have been omitted which sought to further clarify our position on Kamalwathi vis a vis “Sunday Divaina” article in question.

A Sri Lankan lady, whose misfortune had led her to work abroad as a maid was rushed to a hospital 100 miles from her home-land's capital, Colombo, with severe pain after returning home from Saudi Arabia where she took a job last March.  It was subsequently discovered that the family she had worked for would regularly punish her by hammering nails and needles into her body.

Doctors at the hospital have done a great job, being able to remove 13 nails and 05 needles from the Sri Lankan woman's body, principally from her legs and forehead.   The nails ranged in length from 01 to 02 inches while the needles were each around an inch long.

I believe that this lady is a unique example of a true survivor and I think she is really lucky to be alive at all, with doctors saying that she is still recovering from her ordeal.

X-rays have shown that she had 24 nails and needles in her body, said Dr. Keerthi Satharasinghe of Kamburupitiya hospital, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away from the capital, Colombo.
